During 1967, Automobile Engg. Deptt. In Govt. Polytechnic, Bikram Chowk Jammu was added to the on going conventional Engg. Deptt. (viz. civil , Electrical & Mechanical) which were started was back in 1960.

Initially a post diploma course of one year duration for those candidates who had qualified three year diploma in Mech. Engg. was introduced. There after a full fledged three years diploma course in the discipline was started in the year 1973. The first batch of regular Automobile Engg. diploma holder passed out in 1976. The passed out candidates are well placed in Govt. as well as Pvt. sector. Some of the passed out candidates during the previous years have even found green pastures in some foreign countries.

The building of the automobile deptt. Comprises of a huge complex where separate sections of workshop, Laboratories & servicing section are housed. The practical & theoretical training spreads over 3 years giving complete insight to the trainees into the working / operation / fault diagnosis & fault repairing / Preventive maintenance of various types of vehicles, operations of various machines & testing equipments during first year emphasis is laid on topics of general interest, whiles, separate subjects are taught during 2nd & 3rd year & the training includes shop floor to a achieve world of work, industrial visits & inplant training. Besides the regular defined subject matter, managerial & communication skills are also taught to the trainees enabling them to interact with various types of people in the field & also training them to develop shop floor management staff to lead a group of workers as a team leader.

The employment opportunity for the passed out candidates are ample due to continuous increase in production of automobiles & the demand (e.g. two wheelers, three wheelers. L.C.V.S & H.C.V. S). The demand of trained personnel in more in private sector. The candidates’ entry level being that of a supervisor & they rise to become Managers in the long run. The passed outs can start their own enterprises. There is enough job potential in the market. The job of surveyor / loss assesor can also be taken with any of the General Insurance companies. There are opportunities of employment in Motor vehicles department, Police transport Workshop, Forest corporation Workshop, state motor garage, state transport. Due to the present day scenario, there are ample opportunities even in sales & Marketing.
