Civil engineering department, which is the biggest department of this institute, started the 3 year diploma course in the year 1960-61 with the intake capacity of 30 students, but in the later years the intake capacity was increased to 40. The intake is through the competent authority every year in the month of Sept-Oct for the diploma. The qualification fixed for the entry to the course is matriculation. Civil engineering department prepares the students in the three year for the various construction industries in public and private sector, railways, hospitals, military engineering services, boards and corporations, construction companies, transportation department, telecommunication, PWD and Rural development. Our department also prepares the students for self-employment in areas such as RCC design, construction planning and management. Many of the students of this institute are successful entrepreneur. We focus on imparting technical and practical knowledge to the student. We believe in the overall development of the student and prepare them to serve the nation on the technical grounds.
The course of the Civil engineering diploma is directed towards modern construction planning and designing. Our department is fully equipped with latest and modern laboratories which include concrete technology lab, survey lab, building material and construction, PHE, Highway, Soil lab and hydraulics lab which are fully equipped with latest equipments. Our department also has computer learning resources which help the students to understand the subject easily and clearly and increase their knowledge. Our department has procured the latest softwares including STRUDS ( RCC designing for multistory building), PROSTAT. Our department had software learning sources on transportation engineering including highway, bridge, tunnels, airports, mechanics of structures etc.
The staff of Civil engineering includes lectures, demonstrators and technicians. All the staff of civil department is well qualified, sincere, dedicated and experienced. HOD and one lecturer of our department had undergone a fellow ship training programme under World Bank scheme in Germany in the year 2004-05 for three months in the field of modern construction techniques. To meet the technical requirements of the diploma, our department also sends the staff for various short term courses to NITTTR Chandigarh which is the technical and academic consultant of our department. Our department has also started a new pragramme for construction under TVET to enhance the technical skill of masons of rural areas.
