Recent advancements in the areas of computers and communication technology has made computer based tools and techniques available to us. In this high-tech era, computer is something without which individuals cannot survive and their success depends on their ability to accurately use computers. In the recent years, the world has seen the area of computers& Information technology rapidly growing. Dynamic analyzing behaviour of these Information giants is evolving plethora of information, which is being applied towards the developmental activities.

The importance of introducing computer Engineering as a department was felt back in 90’s.To serve the growing need of computer specialized manpower, the sanction for starting Computer department was accorded to Govt. Boys Polytechnic Jammu in year 1992 with the initial intake of 10 students annually. The new department started functioning and admitted the first batch of Diploma in computer Engineering in the year 1993.

The department of computer Engineering enjoys a place of pride amongst all the departments of the college. Impressed upon the overall performance of the department, the intake of the students was increased form 10 to 30 in year 2004 .

The department admits about 30 students every year in the diploma engg. program .The curriculum of the deptt. is revised under the World Bank scheme, which is industry oriented & practice based .Emphasis of the course is on computer science, s/w development , hardware design-management & networking. Specialized knowledge on analysis & design of information is imparted to the students through the audio-video aids (multimedia projectors). Industrial training plays a very important role in meeting challenges of today’s industry, so students of department are given chance to go for the industrial training for short periods. The deptt. also impart lectures to the students of other disciplines of the college. Various workshops on current topic are organized in the department from time to time. To make full utilization of the course by the students various training /seminars based on the entrepreneurship are organized by the deptt. Currently, the department has faculty of seven members whose interests spans among various areas of the Computer Science .

Utilizing the grants provided & grooming the students in lue of latest technology, the students are exposed to latest software & hardware technologies in well-equipped Computer labs established in the department.

OTHER COURSES OFFERED

At present apart from regular three-year diploma engineering course, the department is offering vocational courses for both boys & girls.
